Registering fake doctors lands regitarar behind bars

March 30: In a major breakthrough the Economic offences cell of Mumbai police today arrested the Registrar of Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicines for making registeration of Unani and Ayurvedic doctors based on bogus cetificates and degrees.

The arrested Registarar has been identified as Mohommed Salauddin Osmani (44) and will be produced before the metropolitan court tomorrow for remand. The police is looking for few more officers and some agents who were involved in this scam.

It may be recalled that during the winter session of the Maharashtra Assembly last year the subject of Registration of Bogus Ayurvedic and Unani doctors was widely discussed and had pressed inqury into the scam and a committee was formed to inquire into the matter. The committee under the secretary for medicines, assistant auditor S N Rankhambe, auditor D S Desai and S R Parab conducted an inquiry and submitted its report to the Mumbai police and a case was registered at the Colaba police station on March 8.

Osmani today applied for the anticipatory bail which was rejected by the Session courts. The investigating officer, Sunil Chitre said, "the modus operandi of Osmani and his associates is that Osmani used to registered the applications of Ayurvedic and Unani doctors without verifiying their certificates or degrees. Osmani has registered lots of fake certificates and degrees universities situated outside Maharashtra such as Sampoornanad Sanskrit Mahavidhyalaya, Varnasi Hindi Sahitya Sammelan, Prayag, Allahbad University etc."

Senior officer of EOW, Rajan Khatdare said that some of chemist from Mumbai have also done fake registration at Osmani's office and the case is under investigation.

Further, Chitre told that Osmani charged around Rs 15,000 and 40,000 depending upon the capacity of the person giving the money and in many cases the applicant were granted registration numbers and issused the registration certificates without properly verifying the genuineness of the documents submitted.

Further, it has been learnt that Osmani had even changed the birth date of one Unani lady doctor from 30 years to 45 years on the basis of a single affidavit.

Osmani has been in the office of Registrar Of Government of Maharashtra since 1972 and till now 38,000 applicant have been registered under his tenure. The police is suspecting 5,000 cases may be fake.
