Joshi asks animal rights activists not to oppose research
SANTWANA BHATTACHARYA

NEW DELHI, APRIL 3: Animal rights workers should be practical and not endanger scientific research in their fight against cruelty on animals, Human Resource Development (HRD) and Science and Technology Minister Murli Manohar Joshi said.

Joshi argued that such research might be crucial to patenting items. In an indirect reference to Minister of State for Social Empowerment Maneka Gandhi, he said: ‘‘There is need to develop scientific research. Otherwise, we will lag behind in getting patents that are crucial in this competitive world.’’ Maneka, as an animal rights worker, had spearheaded the move against use of primates in scientific research. As a result, various scientific organisations now have to get permission and follow tough rules to use primates for vital research.

Joshi ridiculed the move as a hindrance to research and development in the country. ‘‘Those championing the cause of animals should be more pragmatic in their approach. The agencies that fight against cruelty on animals need to be more careful.’’ He harped on his favourite theme of everything being second to national interest. Joshi explained that use of primates was necessary for research so that certain items could be patented.

He emphasised that most developing countries put no stringent restrictions on vital research and development.
