




Justice Hansen’s verdict has provoked angry reaction in Australia because it is felt that Harbhajan got off lightly and BCCI’s money power and economic clout coupled with its threat to abandon the remaining matches influenced Hansen’s decision. The latter criticism is unfair and has been repudiated by the judge who has denied that any influence was brought on him. The case was decided on the basis of the agreed statement of facts and the evidence presented which did not satisfy the requisite high standard to warrant a violation under level 3.3 of the ICC Code. Interestingly Justice Hansen was of the view that even if the word “monkey” were used, it would not amount to a racial slur in view of the overall context and surrounding circumstances.
Bhajji has escaped by the skin of his teeth. Justice Hansen’s verdict has certainly provided much-needed relief because it has rebutted the racism charge. However, reading the verdict as a whole and in light of BCCI’s aggressive statements during the pendency of the appeal, the Hansen verdict is not an occasion for wild celebration but calls for sober introspection by ICC, BCCI and all the players involved.
Weird theories
There is no dearth of weird theories floating around. At one stage according to medical research Viagra was said to be a good cure for diabetes. Understandably the tribe of enthusiastic diabetic consumers appreciably increased. There are no verifiable reports whether the sugar level went down or whether sexual appetite and vigour were enhanced. No doubt some charitable medical organisation will initiate solid research into this vital subject, spend crores and also claim Income Tax exemptions.
