Family of Indian abducted in Afghanistan pins hopes on govt
BANGALORE, APRIL 24:Having already worked in Afghanistan for nearly four year, Naeem Sarang Mohammed, the 39-year-old Indian engineer reported to have been kidnapped, was familiar with the dangers of working in that country, members of his family said on Wednesday.
The father of three was in India three months ago to change his visa after receiving a call to work for the US company EOD Technology, his brother-in-law Mohammed Hussein said on phone from their family home near Mangalore. “He was aware of the dangers. He had told us that he needed to travel under security cover and could not come and go as he wished. He was happy with his job though and was trying to get a job for his cousin in the same company,” Hussein said.
On Tuesday afternoon, the family got a call from Naeem’s employers saying he had been kidnapped. “They said they would do their best to secure him,” said Naeem’s father Sarang Hussein.
While the kidnapped engineer’s wife, two daughters and a son are away in Mumbai for their school holidays, his two elder sisters, a younger sister and their families were with Naeem’s elderly parents.
“It is Naeem who is supporting the family. It is their breadwinner who is in danger and they are naturally in great distress. His wife is aware of what has happened, but the children have not been told,” said brother-in-law Basheer Ahmed. On the evening he was kidnapped, Naeem had called his home around 5 pm.
Prior to joining EOD Technology, Naeem had been working at a hotel in the region for nearly four years. While the local police and some politicians have made some enquiries with the family, no official word on the kidnapping has been provided by government agencies.
“We are hoping the Government will also help in getting Naeem free,” a relative said.
