Chennai, April 26:Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram has said prices of essential commodities will be brought down through effective measures.

Talking to the media on Saturday on the sidelines of a function here, Chidambaram said the Union Government would take necessary steps to bring down the prices of essential commodities. He, however, did not elaborate the measures.

Inflation, which reached 7.33 per cent according to the latest figures, and prices of essential commodities in particular had brought the Government under attack from opposition parties and a few of the allies.

Addressing the graduates of Women’s Christian College here during his convocation address, FM justified reservation in education as an affirmative action that would democratise the system. Indian education system was underperforming over the years, with millions of children falling out of its reach, he said.

Within the 11th Five-Year Plan period, the Centre was aiming to improve the enrolment ratio from 11.6 per cent to 15 per cent, he said while pointing out the increased allocation for its universal education programme, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) and other initiatives.
