Delhi gets SOS from Yangon, will fly in team of Army docs
New Delhi, May 15:Responding swiftly to an urgent request for assistance by Myanmar, India is rushing in a 50-member Army medical team along with crucial supplies to the cyclone-hit country. Government officials said that an IL 76 aircraft of the Indian Air Force (IAF) will airlift the medical staff and six tonnes of medicines to Yangon on Saturday to carry out relief work.
Government officials said that the team is being sent in response to a direct request by Yangon for Army medical doctors to treat patients in the cyclone-affected areas. The Indian Army delegation will be divided into two separate teams and will be carrying enough medicines to cater to 4,000 people.
India has already dispatched three IL-76, two AN-32 and two shiploads of relief supplies including medicines, food, tents and clothing to Yangon over the past few days under “Operation Sahayata”.
Over 124 tonnes of relief material, including 12,000 packets of readymade meals, have been sent to the country. Two warships had taken large quantities of clothes, blankets, tents and high power torches.
