‘Diabetics at high risk of kidney problems’

People with high blood pressure,diabetes and family history of kidney problems are at higher risk of falling victim to debilitating kidney ailments...

“People with high blood pressure,diabetes and family history of kidney problems are at higher risk of falling victim to debilitating kidney ailments,” said Dr Arjinder Bains,Renal Transplant Surgeon,Fortis Hospital,during a special interactive educational session held on creating awareness about renal transplant here today.

The audience included renal patients from tricity,who had undergone kidney transplants and who were on dialysis. These patients shared their experiences with other present and potential patients.

Dr Bains elaborated that acute kidney failure occurs when kidneys suddenly become unable to filter wastes from blood. “Acute kidney failure may also occur when some blood flow to kidneys is slowed down or when wastes filtered are not able to leave body through urine,” he said.

Encouraging healthy changes in lifestyle for prevention of kidney problems in life,Dr Bains added that healthy diet should have plenty of fruits,vegetables,legumes (peas or beans) and grain-based food. He advised eating meat like chicken and fish each week and ensure that salty or fatty food were consumed in minimum quantity.
