Hosting Games bad decision

On Sunday,Bhaichung Bhutia happily participated in the Commonwealth Games baton relay when it arrived in the city. Three days later, the Indian football captain was questioning the relevance of the Games, saying that the country would have been better off without hosting the event. Bhutia said India never had the infrastructure to host such an event in the first place.

We should not have taken a decision to host the Games. The infrastructure is not ready. Look at the situation, the grounds are not ready. Even in hockey, there are not many turfs in India. Even a nation like Malaysia is better-placed to host the Games. We should not have bid for the Games, he said.

Asked why he didnt express his views before, the striker said,Since the nation has taken the decision to host the Games,I want it to be successful. But if you see, there is no proper training ground for football in Delhi. They have just one Ambedkar Stadium. During Durand Cup preparation,we train in a park.

The government is spending so much of money on this but they are doing nothing to develop infrastructure.

We should be focused on building infrastructure first and then think of bidding for a big multi-nation game like the CWG. The authorities have not thought properly before bidding for CWG. It was a completely wrong decision, he said.

Charlesworth fears total chaos

Australias national hockey coach and former technical adviser for Indian hockey,Ric Charlesworth cast the latest doubts over CWG games venues and accommodation. Forget about the venues,we have to live in the village. And my experience (in India) says that it wont be finished, Charlesworth said. My concern is that we will get there and have people stuck on the 15th floor with no working lifts,no air-conditioning,electricity going on and off,no water in the taps and poor sewerage, he told The Australian.

Meanwhile,Australian Commonwealth Games boss Perry Crosswhite said: Some of the finishing will not be of the standard we have normally, but we always knew it would be that way and we have told our athletes to expect that, Crosswhite said.
