Those violating traffic rules would soon face action as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) would soon appoint an agency that would monitor and manage its intelligent transport system introduced in the city.
The intelligent transport system with its control centre in Swargate has been operational since the last few months, but due to the absence of an implementing authority,it was unable to inculcate traffic discipline among citizens.
“We have received proposals from three agencies to implement the intelligent transport system. The system will be implemented in the next few months,” said Srinivas Bonala,PMC traffic planner.
The implementation was delayed due to differences between civic body and the city police. “All issues related to the implementation of the intelligent transport system have been resolved now,” he said. Bonala said the private agency is being appointed with the consent of traffic police and would start working after the approval from the standing committee.
The agency will be responsible for round-the-clock monitoring of traffic through the control room. As per the guidelines, there will be maximum ten people at a time in the control room and they have to register a complaint within in 30 seconds of the rule violation identified through video screening.
Once the complaint is registered,it would be followed up by the city traffic police. The violators would receive the traffic police letter through mail with a specific deadline to pay the fine.
“The PMC has installed high-resolution cameras at major junctions along with speed sensors. Those in the control room would keep surveillance, check speed violation and signal violation,” he said.
The ITS for Pune also includes installing vehicle tracking device on the garbage dumping vehicles. “The system will also be used in keeping a check on movements of the garbage dumping vehicles in the city,” civic health officer said adding this will help in tackling irregularities against the civic staff.
