The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) feels that the government's target to build roads at 20 km a day are unsustainable and cannot be achieved because of too may government agencies getting involved.

The chairman o f NHAI R P Singh said that the finance ministry and Planning Commission were getting involved with the nitty gritty of project implementation. "It is a case of too many cooks spoiling the broth. The Planning Commission and the Department of Economic Affairs should lay down policy guidelines only," Singh said at a Ficci conference on Thursday.

Singh added: "Buildings roads at 20 km a day is unsustainable and cannot be achieved, as the market does not have the capacity. To build 10,000 km, one requires an investment of at least Rs 90,000 crore and around 30 per cent of this money should come in the form of equity from companies, which is difficult."
