‘Car thief’ shoots self in Baghpat, family questions police theory

Baghpat SP Lov Kumar said the incident took place in full public view and around 300 people were present at the spot. He said that Phool Kumar fired twice on the police team before killing himself.

The police recovered a country-made pistol, which he used for shooting himself, and jewellery worth around Rs 3 lakh.

On Saturday afternoon, the Baghpat police were informed by the Delhi police control room that a youth had robbed a car from a businessman in Delhi's Narela area, which is about 20 km from Baghpat. The Delhi police flashed the details of the car to all neighbouring districts.

In the evening, the police saw the car passing through Barot crossing and sounded an alert. At Rashtravandan crossing, barricades were put up to intercept the car.

The car stopped at some distance from the barricade, a man came out and tried to run away. When the police followed him, the man opened fire but no one was hurt.

In the meantime, another police team arrived from the opposite direction. A crowd of locals also gathered. Finding himself surrounded, the man stopped near an auto spare shop and shot himself in the head. The police took him to hospital where he was declared dead. His identity was ascertained from the driving license in his pocket. The police called his family from Delhi.

Phool Kumar's father Karam Veer said there was no reason for his son to kill himself just to avoid being caught by the police.
