Close encounters set the stage for unexpected revelations. And during an evening of free-wheeling conversation with actor Aamir Khan at Express Adda in Mumbai Wednesday, several Bollywood myths were busted.
The balmy evening and eclectic gathering witnessed the superstar elaborate on his life and work — re-establishing the openness that has come to be his hallmark.
He revealed he is not into gadgets, wants to go back one day to theatre, that he signed Rang De Basanti even though wife Kiran Rao was not convinced about it then, and that he can't stop crying when he gets affected.
"The responsibility of a creative person is not just to entertain or engage, but also to bring grace to society, build values in people... It makes people ponder over issues and hopefully builds social fabric. That's what I have been doing or at least trying to do," said the actor.
When he travelled across India around the time of 3 Idiots's release, Khan said, it threw up interesting results — including that people in several parts of India were not familiar with him. That's when he realised his films were not reaching out to a lot of people. Nearly three years later, he managed to bridge that gap through Satyamev Jayate.
However, Khan said, what surprised him was media criticism for "not saying anything new". About his "aversion" to award ceremonies, Khan said: "In my heart, I need to have value for a certain award or platform. If I don't have that, then I don't criticise it but stay away from it."
