‘Delhi man, fleeing after robbery, kills self in UP’

A 25-year-old Delhi man, who had allegedly robbed a businessman of his car, shot himself dead when intercepted by the Uttar Pradesh Police in Baghpat on Saturday evening.

Phool Kumar's family, who went to Baghpat on Sunday morning to claim the body, said they were not convinced with the police theory about his death. They said they would take up the matter after conducting the last rites.

Baghpat SP Lov Kumar said the incident took place in front of around 300 people. He said that Kumar fired twice at the police team before killing himself. Police claimed to have recovered a pistol and jewellery worth around Rs 3 lakh from him.

Officers said the Delhi Police alerted the UP Police on Saturday afternoon about a man, who had robbed a businessman of his car in Narela and had fled towards Baghpat — some 20 km from the crime spot. The Delhi Police gave details of the car. In the evening, the car was seen passing through Baraut, Baghpat. An alert was sounded and barricades were put up at Rashtravandan crossing.

The car stopped some yards away from the barricade, a man came out and tried to run, police said. When policemen chased him, he fire at them but no one was hit.

In the meantime, another police team arrived from the opposite direction. A crowd also gathered. Finding himself cornered, the man stopped near a shop and shot himself in the head, police said.

The man's identity was ascertained from the driving licence found in his pocket. Police informed his family in Delhi.

His father Karam Veer, who is a government employee, said there was no reason for his son to kill himself. "I am not satisfied with the police theory. I will lodge a complaint with senior police officers and demand an inquiry," he said.
