‘Ebaar ektu gaan hok’

At the end of the inaugural function of Bengal Leads, little did the handful of industrialists who came there knew that soon they will have to face the music. Literally.

After finishing her speech, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee requested the industrialists to sing a song. May be to enliven the mood that was sagging after her 45-minute speech replete with statistics and rhetorics. "Ebaar ektu gaan hok (let there be some songs)," Mamata said to the fright of her party MPs and industrialists seated on the dais. "Sanjiv (Goenka), you deal in music. Can't you sing?" Mamata asked the RPG Enterprises chief. Then she turned to her MPs — Saugata Roy and Sudip Bandopadhyay — and said: "Saugatada please come and sing, Sudipda,you also come."' While Saugata Roy, vehemently shook his head, Sudip could not defy Didi and gently walked up to her holding the microphone.

And the industrialist who showcased his musical talent was C K Dhanuka of Dhunserry Industries as he serenaded the audience with a rendition of Manna Dey's song "Ai Mere Watan". Soon he turned to the famous Rabindrasangeet "Jadi Tor Daak Shune Na Ashe Tobe Ekla Chalo Re". Sudip and Sanjiv gave "lip service" to the songs. At the end, it was the CM who led from the front by being the lead singer of the national anthem.
