‘Equality for women can make 21st century successful for India’

Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari emphasised upon the need for equal and equitable representation of women in the work force if Indian aspired to make the 21st century to be truly an Indian Century.

He asserted this while presenting degrees to the students at Guru Nanak Girls College, Model Town on Saturday. Appreciating the fact that the participation of women in the work force was gradually on the rise, Tewari underlined the need for creating a free and a safe environment for the women.

Tewari said, the government is putting in all the effort to provide a free and a safe atmosphere to the women folk, but legal and administrative action alone cannot succeed unless the society also pitches in and supports the government effort. He added that on their part, the women also will have to play a bigger role in eliminating social evils including the bane of drug abuse. He said that there are certain areas, where the women are being ignored and have to face all types of discrimination and have to tackle all kinds of prejudices.

Felicitating the students, Tewari exhorted them to strive for excellence in the present globalised world and valiantly accept the challenges which the life throws up. Tewari opined that there was a need for providing education with a blend of cultural, social, moral and spiritual values. Tewari added that India has a huge demographic dividend and it has a much younger work force as compared to other nations of the world and this work force is needed to be put on a constructive path for building a strong nation.

'No discrimination with Punjab on funds'

Meanwhile, Tewari said that UPA government is committed to strengthening the rural infrastructure in the Country and providing grants to all States including Punjab. Addressing public meetings at various villages of his Parliamentary Constituency Ludhiana today he said that Centre is providing grants to Punjab without any discrimination, but there is a need to implement the Central Schemes in the State with more earnest manner.
