While trying to steer clear of the allegations against Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson P J Kurien in the Suryanelli rape case, the opposition BJP on Tuesday suggested that Kurien might have to resign if investigations are initiated against him in the case.
"The issue is currently between the Kerala government and the petitioner (victim). It is an individual's allegation against another individual. If it is decided to investigate allegations and court takes notice of it, Kurien might have to resign," senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi said in reply to queries regarding his party's position on this issue.
While BJP is avoiding wading into the controversy, the Left has demanded Kurien's resignation. CPI leader Annie Raja, in fact, has written a letter to Congress president Sonia Gandhi demanding Kurien's resignation from his Rajya Sabha post.
"When the entire country is debating on gender justice and protection and safety of women and the world is eagerly watching the actions taken by the government of India, it will be improper and unethical on the part of the UPA-2 govt to allow P J Kurien to continue as the Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha," Raja has written.
