The noose seems to be tightening on former Uttarakhand Minority Commission Chairman Sukhdev Singh, who is currently in jail in connection with liquor baron Ponty Chadha murder case. Inquiries conducted by Punjab Police found that he got arms licences and passport by submitting fake documents. The report of the inquiries led the government to register cases against Namdhari on Sunday night.
Over the years, Namdhari had purchased three weapons — a 315 bore Rifle, a DBBL Gun and a pistol. He got the arms licences from Punjab authorities by adopting the method of getting duplicate licence issued on fake address. The licences are valid till March 2013.
As per the inquiry report, Namdhari had applied to Roop Nagar District Magistrate in 1994 for an arms licence. The residence proof submitted was a ration card with address of Master Colony, Kurali. Within a day of filing of the application, it was forwarded to SSP Ropar and then to SHO of Kurali police station, which is quite uncommon.
The report says gross irregularities were apparent in the police verification report, where ASI Gurcharan Singh recorded the statement of one Satpal of ward number 11 of Kurali and verified the same.
He forwarded and recommended the file for issuance of fresh arms licence to MHC of Kurali, Bhajan Singh, for verification. On the basis of the report of the MHC, the same ASI recommended the case signing as SHO of Kurali police station. It is apparent that right from the verification of the statement, the same official forwarded the file, the probe report said.
Four other applicants, including his brother, were issued arms licences.
Namdhari applied to the DC of Amritsar, for a duplicate arms licence and renewal of his licence that were issued in March 2001 on furnishing fake address of Ranjit Pura, Amritsar.
