‘Only 40% of JNNURM projects in big and 50% in small cities completed’

Deadline for the phase I of projects ends in March next year.

Although the deadline for implementation of the first phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) across the country ends in March next year, only 40 per cent of the projects in big cities and 50 per cent in small cities are complete. This was announced by Prem Narayan,Director of JNNURM,in the city on Wednesday.

Addressing the inaugural session of the meet on Urban Water and Waste Management Technologies and Applications for India, organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce,Industries and Agriculture,Narayan said that the second phase of the project would be launched soon.

He said of the 540 project launched in cities under Urban Infrastructure and Governance, only 212 have been completed. Of the 806 projects under the Urban Infrastructure Development for Small Towns, only 403 have been completed,he added.

He said the major constraint was the gap in fundings to complete projects. Currently, the transition phase of JNNURM is on and there were no fund constraints provided the states come up with good Detailed Project Report that can take advantage of this phase,he said.

Acknowledging the delays in implementing projects,Narayan said they have learnt several things from the phase I of the project. Problems ranged from land acquisition, public agitation, encroachments, clearance from utilities such as railways,MoEF and defence, involvement of local stakeholders and agencies,he added.

The meet attracted a host of German,Canadian,Belgian and Swiss water, waste water and solid waste management companies indicating the potential they see in Indian market for their water and treatment technologies. Many of them have already set up bases in India or are in the process.
