‘Our students will always do well’

Quest interviews Sister Vinita , Principal, Mar Ivanios Convent School

What is the syllabus followed in your school and how was the academic performance of the school last year?

We follow the SSC board. And the argument that it is not good is not true. All alumni of the school have done well in their life. It is not the syllabus that counts, it is what the children understand from the syllabus that does. Once the child understands the basic concepts in various subjects, scoring becomes very easy in any syllabus.

Of the 107 students who took the Class X board exams, 85 got distinction and the rest secured first class. There were no second class or failed students. The topper of the batch secured 92.91%. We always had 100% results. That is one of the factors that attracts the parents. Besides, the students passing out of our school get selected to the best schools and colleges. More than teaching, we make the students understand the importance of education in shaping their future so that they themselves take their studies seriously.

Tell us about the sports activities of the school.

Our students participate in various sports events such as table tennis, swimming, throw ball, chess, cricket, lawn tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo, handball, roller skating, volleyball, wrestling, roll ball, karate, badminton and athletics. In badminton, our girls secured first place and were selected to the zonal level of u14 doubles. They were also through to the state level in the same category. Two of our boys played in the state-level karate competition. Forty of our students participated in athletics and were selected for zonal levels. Seven players were selected for state level in athletics and one of them played in the national-level long jump event held in Uttarakhand in November this year. Manisha Jadhav, a national gold medalist and also one of our sports teachers, gives special training to our athletes. Raju Gamre, another sports teacher, has been awarded the Best Teacher Award 2012 by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Our school received the Best School Award in 2001 and 2006. Our school management has supported our sports teachers in all activities. A special sports club is conducted for the interested students after school. Though the sports period is part of the curriculum and every student has to participate in it, we also nudge the students to join the sports club if they show special talents so we can nurture them at a young age.
