‘Raise per capita power consumption’

Leading nuclear scientist S Banerjee on Thursday underlined the need for harnessing non-conventional energy sources to generate electricity. Thermal power plants create pollution as they use fossil fuels. In contrast, non-conventional energy sources are largely pollution-free, he said.

The former Atomic Energy Commission Chairman was delivering the key note address at a seminar on 'Impact of Modern Science on the lives of People' at Bordi near here. Banerjee said there was a need to increase per capita consumption of energy in the country. At present, per capita power consumption was 720 kWh, which should be raised to 2,000 kWh by 2020, he said.

Speaking on renewable energy resources, he suggested using non-agricultural land for generating solar/wind power.

The lecture was jointly organised by BARC, Indian National Science Academy and Gokhale Education Societies College at Bordi.
