A man, apparently spurned, cut off the nose of a 19-year-old girl with a sharp-edged weapon in Uruwa Bazar area of Gorakhpur district on Tuesday. The girl is a BA third year student at Narsingh Mahavidyalaya in Uruwa Bazar, about 50 km from Gorakhpur city.
Gorakhpur Senior Superintendent of Police Ashutosh Kumar said the assailant has been identified as Sonu Yadav (21), who is the grandson of Chandrabhan Yadav, owner of the coaching institute where the girl attended her classes.
He said Sonu talked to the girl on Tuesday afternoon while she was returning from the coaching institute in the afternoon and later cut off her nose.
Kumar said the mother of the girl brought her to Savitri hospital in Gorakhpur with the help of some villagers.
She was later shifted to Gorakhpur medical college. The police arrived after receiving information about the incident from
mediapersons.
Kumar said the girl's marriage had been fixed last month and this seems to have angered Sonu. He said the police had not yet recorded the girl's statement.
The girl's mother refused to speak at the hospital. However, Ashok, the girl's uncle, said she was walking home when Sonu and one of his friend came on a motorbike from behind and stopped her.
While Sonu's friend caught the girl's hands, Sonu chopped off her nose.
According to Ashok, Sonu then took the girl to his home in nearby Araw Jagdish village on his bike. From there, the girl called up her mother and informed about the incident.
Her mother allegedly went to the accused's house and brought the girl to Gorakhpur for treatment.
Ashok said the boy had studied with the girl in the same class during their schooling and had developed "one-sided feelings" for her.
