‘They were behaving like animals’

Protests for the rollback of mess and canteen charges of Panjab University took the entire university administration and the UT police by surprise on Thursday. The university administration had to inform the Chandigarh Police to control the situation after students broke into the office of PU V-C Prof Arun Grover.

The vice-chancellor had filed a written complaint against the students but later took back his formal complaint from the police authorities keeping in mind the future of the students.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Central), Ashish Kapoor, reached the spot as soon as he received the complaint and said: "The ruckus that these students have created here today was totally baseless." However, the students were adamant to call the V-C outside his office.

"The V-C had given me a written complainant in the morning but later in the evening he took it back saying that the future of the students will be spoiled if police action is taken against them. Instead he gave us in writing that he does not want any further police action," added the DSP.

Sarita Roy, the in-charge of PGI police post, who was handling security since 8 am said: "The girls went totally out of control. We had a really tough time in controlling them."

Students also misbehaved with the journalists. Some of the journalists were even pushed when they barged in the office breaking all the fencing around the office.

"They have been trying to break the gates to the V-C office as well. Even the girls are raising slogans using abusive language against the police and the administration of Panjab University. They literally behaved like animals today," said Sarita Roy.

Using derogatory language against police officials, the girls protesting against the raise in prices of meals tried to break into the office of the PU-VC at about 1 pm. However, authorities immediately informed the police and called for a riot control team.
