‘Unable to achieve much in life’, student kills self

A first-year commerce student from Malad east allegedly committed suicide at his Kurar residence early on Monday. A suicide note left by him said that he was taking such an extreme step as he could not achieve much in life, said police.

Kurar police officers said Hemant Khadawde (18) was a student of Mittal College in Malad west and was extremely ambitious.

Police said he was a resident of a chawl at Azad Nagar where he stayed with his father Harish Chandra and younger sister. His mother stays at their village.

On Sunday night after dinner, Hemant went to his room on the first floor of the house to sleep while his father and sister were asleep on the ground floor. Hemant's father told police that the next morning around 6 am when he went upstairs to wake his son up, he found him hanging from the ceiling fan.

A shocked Harish informed the police, who arrived at the spot immediately. On searching Hemant's pocket, police allegedly found a suicide note written in Hindi.

"The suicide note stated that he was taking an extreme step as he could not do much for his father and sister. He wrote that he was ending his life for which nobody should be blamed," said senior police inspector Subhash Dafle.

The police have registered an accidental death report as per routine procedure in suicide cases and are investigating the case.

In his statement to the police, Harish has allegedly said that since the past few days, Hemant had been staying aloof from his family and friends. Hemant had not, however, spoken to him about his depressed state of mind, Harish told police.

"We have sent Hemant's body for post mortem to Bhagwati Hospital. At present, we are in the process of recording the statements of Hemant's family and friends to find out whether he had discussed anything with them," said an officer from the Kurar police station, who did not wish to be named.
