To strengthen trade ties between India and Canada, British Columbia (BC) Finance Minister Michael de Jong inaugurated the BC trade and investment office in Chandigarh on Friday. The investment office will function as part of the Consulate General of Canada, Sector 17. British Columbia is the westernmost parts of Canada.
Jong said the setting up of the office pointed to the importance given by the BC government to trade ties between Punjab and Canada. "The trade office will help us to identify the opportunities and products that can be exchanged between both the sides," he said.
Jong added that the BC was also in favour of strengthening cultural relations with Punjab so that "they can be translated into powerful economic relations".
"There is a wealth of entrepreneurial energy in the city and we will unleash it," the minister said. He added that the partnership between India and Canada could be build in different spheres, including education, agro-products and food processing industry.
The minister also said that the opening of trade office was a realisation of a 10-year dream of the BC government. "Trade and investment office will facilitate the working of trade proposals between India and Canada". It is a big thing as the BC is the only province of Canada to have its trade and investment office in the city," he added.
