‘YouTube has deleted 7 videos of controversial film’

The Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) of the Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Wednesday filed an affidavit in the Bombay High Court stating that online video-sharing website YouTube has deleted seven of the 10 videos related to the contentious film The Innocence of Muslims. The movie had sparked violent protests in Egypt and Libya that spread to some other countries as well.

The affidavit filed by CCIC Police Inspector Ravi Sardesai stated that the content of the film is "highly offensive and objectionable" and is likely to hurt the sentiments of Muslims.

YouTube could, however, not provide the IP (internet protocol) addresses from where the film was uploaded as they were located outside India, stated the affidavit submitted by Public Prosecutor Revati Dere.

"...the CCIC has also initiated the process of issuance of letter rogatory to get the IP and physical addresses of the persons who uploaded these video links, and action will be taken in accordance with law on getting the information," it stated.

The CCIC said it is "closely monitoring and patrolling Internet sites and making efforts to ensure that the video is deleted".

The PIL filed by Congress activist Ameen Mustafa Idrisi (30) sought criminal action against Google Corporation's CEO Larry Page, its co-founder Sergey Brin, chairman Eric Schmidt for letting the film — that has "hurt the religious feelings" of Muslims across the world — stay online.

The petition filed through lawyer Ejaz Naqvi also demanded that websites like Google and YouTube be booked under Sections of the IPC and Information Technology Act, 2000, for showing the "offensive" film and its trailers.
