…For two months, cops have not kept ‘direct’ eye on it too

For two months now,the Mumbai Police Traffic Department control room and other police departments have had no direct and real-time information on the happenings on the highly sensitive Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

For two months now,the Mumbai Police Traffic Department control room and other police departments have had no direct and real-time information on the happenings on the highly sensitive Bandra-Worli Sea Link (BWSL). Mumbai Police officers admitted they have had to check with the MSRDC control room to access real-time information on any situation that may develop on the sea link.

The matter came to light on Sunday when policemen posted in the Traffic Police control room in Worli said they had no information about a possible accident on the sea link as they have not been able to access live CCTV feed for nearly two months. Confirming this, senior police officers said relying on the MSRDC control room for information is tedious.

“We have not been getting live feed in our control room for the past two months. We have been forced to station our officers in MSRDC’s control room to ensure that we have a fair idea of what is happening on the sea link,” said a senior traffic police officer on condition of anonymity.

The BWSL has six CCTV cameras on the north-south carriageway — the stretch from Bandra to Worli. Five cameras are installed on the structure whereas one camera has been installed below it.

The officer said while they had been told that the feed would be up and running at the earliest, that hasn’t happened yet. “Monitoring a stretch like the BWSL is a priority task as its security has to be ensured. We should know if there is an accident so that help can be sent. While the MSRDC control room is doing a good job,we also need to be allowed to monitor the stretch. The state government must take up the matter seriously. They must look into it immediately and not allow bureaucrats to keep the file at their desks for long,” said the officer.

A senior MSRDC official said a proposal has been forwarded to ensure that the Traffic Police also get live feed from the CCTV cameras. “The contract we had signed states there will be live feed for our control room. However, additional facilities have been provided for the traffic control room so even they can monitor the situation. A proposal has been forwarded. The police will get live feed again soon,” said the official.

The official said there was a problem in the fiber optic cable, which takes feed to the Traffic Police control room. “The fiber cable which takes feed to their control room is different. There is some problem with that and it will be fixed soon,” said the official.

The other carriageway, the stretch from Worli to Bandra, does not have CCTV cameras. Senior MSRDC officials revealed that a high-powered committee will meet to ensure that even the other carriageway gets CCTV coverage. “The security committee will decide when the CCTV cameras will be put up. A decision will be taken after the meeting,” added the official.
