Dr Manmohan Singh was sworn in as Prime Minister for the second consecutive term and the Congress,in the 125th year of its founding,went on to retrieve lost political ground in crucial states like Uttar Pradesh.

Section 377

In a landmark judgment by the Delhi Court,Section 377 of the IPC was ‘read down’,leading to the legalisation of homosexual acts among consenting adults. The court held that the 149-year-old law,making homosexuality a criminal offence,is violative of fundamental rights.

A new strain of the influenza virus spread panic around the world soon after it was first detected in Mexico and the United States. According to the World Health Organisation,more than 208 countries and overseas territories or communities reported laboratory confirmed cases of pandemic influenza H1N1,including at least 11,516 deaths.

In another landmark judgment,the Supreme Court held that the Chief Justice of India is a public authority and information held by him on assets of his fellow judges should be made public,fulfilling a longstanding demand for transparency in the judiciary.
