The Gujarat High Court-appointed Kamal Mehta Committee on Tuesday asked 1,084 buildings to install fire safety installations within a period ranging from 30 days to three months.

The six-member committee was appointed this July following a petition by one Shivlal Purohit over the poor implementation of the HC directives to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. It has sought extension of its term which ends on November 30.

Meanwhile, the Committee has worked out certain measures to address different civic issues raised in the petition.

Accordingly, 1,084 buildings will be issued notices for not having fire safety equipment installed in their premises. Of these, 19 are government buildings, which have been asked to install fire safety equipment within 30 days under direct instructions from the municipal commissioner, said Deputy Municipal Commissioner U C Padia.

He said cases of the remaining buildings will be heard at the level of the deputy municipal commissioner of the zone concerned.

Among them, commercial buildings are being told to install fire safety equipment in two months time, whereas residential buildings have been given three months for compliance.

Over and above this, more than 100 party plots have been asked to provide parking facility as per the rules stipulated in the General Development Control Regulations.

In case of non-compliance, they will be asked to shut down, Padia said. The demolition of illegal constructions will follow the orders that will come from the High Court in the case of C G Road buildings.
