A 26-year-old youth was killed and four injured after clashes broke out between CRPF personnel and a group of youth in the temple town of Dharmasthala near Mangalore on Friday. This is the second incident of violence involving security personnel deployed to the Mangalore region from neighbouring states.
The CRPF men from Andhra Pradesh were resting near a field adjacent to the Manjunatheshwara Temple when a cricket ball,from a game being played in the field,hit one of them. An altercation is reported to have broken out between the local youth and the CRPF after the security officials refused to return the ball. The policemen used lathis to push away the youths,who allegedly pelt the CRPF buses with stones.
One constable is reported to have fired a shot in the air and then at the crowd leading to serious injuries to 26-year-old Aithappa,police said. News of the firing and death resulted in escalation of tensions in the town with large numbers of people blockading CRPF vehicles and demanding the arrest of the constables concerned.
The 80-member CRPF team were visiting the temple town after completing election duties in the Naxal-affected regions of Mangalore during polls on Thursday.
Gopal Hosur,DIG,western range,said additional forces from Karnataka were deployed while the CRPF men were escorted out to Mangalore for a probe.
Ahead of polls,on April 26,policemen deployed for election duty from Kerala were arrested after they misbehaved with women on the Panambur beach in Mangalore and later attacked local policemen.
