As the battle for New Delhi ends, the state will soon witness another trial of political strength when by-elections will be conducted to fill 10 vacancies in the state Assembly.

As the battle for New Delhi ends, the state will soon witness another trial of political strength when by-elections will be conducted to fill 10 vacancies in the state Assembly.

As many as seven legislators have been elected to the Lok Sabha with three vacancies already existing in the Assembly owing to the resignation tendered by the contesting candidates.

Apart from the Assembly by-elections,a Lok Sabha by-election is also on the cards as Samajwadi Party candidate Akhilesh Yadav will quit from one of the two seats from where he has been elected — Kannuaj and Ferozabad. The most prominent winner among the MLAs is Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav, who has been elected from Mainpuri. In the Assembly,he represented Bharthana in Etawah district.

According to party sources, the SP chief will be replaced by his brother Shiv Pal Singh Yadav, who is the Jaswant Nagar legislator and is likely to take over as the Leader of Opposition in the Assembly.

On the BJP front,MLA from Lucknow West Lalji Tandon has been elected to the Lok Sabha from the Lucknow parliamentary constituency.

There is a move to field his son Ashutosh Tandon as the BJP candidate in the Assembly by-election. The SP legislator from Bidhauna Dhani Ram Verma had resigned when his son Mahesh Verma was fielded by the BSP from Kannauj.
