At least 10 persons were admitted to a local hospital on Sunday night after they inhaled poisonous gas leaking from a chemical plant in the Nandesari industrial area near Vadodara.
The leakage was reported from the reactor of Bromofine Chem Pvt Ltd, after which fire personnel were called in to control the situation.
According to Vadodara fire department officials, a gas pipeline connected to the reactor of the plant broke down, resulting in leakage of chlorine gas.
"It took around 30 minutes to control the leakage. However, we could not control it completely. Shutting down the reactor did not help much," said a fire official.
Those affected by the leakage of the gas, which is pungent in smell, were rushed to a local hospital after they complained of burning feeling in eyes and throat. Six of them were released soon after while the rest were under medical supervision.
The smell spread far and wide and caused panic in nearby Angad village.
"When the leakage was first detected, we called in Nandesari GIDC fire personnel who were not able to control the situation immediately, after which Vadodara fire department was approached," said a Vadodara fire official.
The Chhani police in Vadodara filed an FIR against the management of the company under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, though nobody was arrested so far, police said.
"We have filed an FIR against whoever are responsible for the leakage at the company and inquiry into the matter is going on," police said.
