10 months on, Park Street rape victim awaits justice

At a time when the national capital is witnessing a huge stir demanding capital punishment for the accused involved in the gangrape of a paramedic student, the victim of Park Street gangrape case in Kolkata is still awaiting justice. Police are yet to nab the prime accused even though more than 10 months have passed since the incident took place.

While Delhi Police has succeeded in arresting the prime accused, Kolkata Police is yet to nab Kader Khan, the main accused in the Park Street rape case.

On February 5 this year, the 37-year-old Anglo-Indian single mother was gangraped after she took a lift in a car from Park Street. She was raped in the moving car and then dumped on a road.

Initially, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee termed the incident "fabricated", triggering a huge outcry from all the sections of the society, including media and social activists.

According to police sources, the sleuths have visited at least two foreign countries and around five cities in search of Kader, but in vain. Among the five accused named in the FIR, three were arrested and at present they are lodged in jail. Kader is still hiding in a foreign country, sources said.

"We have looked out for Kader at several places, but every time there has been some information about him, he manages to give us a slip. We are still trying to nab him," said a senior officer of Kolkata Police.

In May, police submitted a chargesheet against the five accused in the rape case, 82 days after the woman was allegedly raped in a car here. Three of the accused — Sumit Bajaj, Nasser Ali and Ruhman Khan — were arrested on February 18 and they were sent to judicial custody on March 3.
