State Education Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil on Monday said the government was mulling over implementing a proposal to reserve 90 per cent seats for SSC board students and 10 per cent for the students of other boards.

The proposal however has come under fire from the parents of the students who have passed class X exams from the CBSE, ICSE and other boards. Around 50 parents in the city gathered on Tuesday evening to discuss the course of action. “We have decided to seek legal advice on the issue and will go to court against the proposal if the need arises,” said Pramod Shingte, a parent.

“It is sheer discrimination between students of SSC and other boards,” said Shingte. “There is no time left in admissions to class XI as the class X results of CBSE and other boards are out and SSC results are due in a few days. Announcing such a proposal at this time is not justifiable,” he said.

“The implementation of the proposal will ruin the chances of even meritorious students of CBSE and other boards to get admission in reputed colleges, as there will be very few seats available and competition will be high,” said a parent.

For example, there are 720 seats for class XI in S P College, one of the reputed colleges in the city. If the proposal is implemented, only 72 seats will be available to the students of CBSE and other central boards. Moreover, whether there will be regular category wise reservation is also not yet clear. Shigte said the issue was discussed at length in the meeting held at Dnyan Prabodhini School. Parents of students of Dnyan Prabodhini School affiliated to CBSE and Saint Helena School affiliated to ICSE were present at the meeting.

He appealed the parents to gather at Dnyan Prabodhini School on June 13 at 7 pm to discuss the further course of action.
