Chairman of Punjab Farmers’ Commission G S Kalkat said on Thursday that the state government should consider giving 100 per cent subsidy to farmers who develop innovative products. This subsidy, however, should be available only till the time the product gets demonstrated for the first time after which it should be withdrawn,Kalkat said.

Kalkat was presiding over the panel discussion on ‘Indo-US relations in the wake of Obama’s India visit’ organised at Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Engineering College,Fatehgarh Sahib.

Participating in the discussion,Jagwant Singh, president of the Punjab and Chandigarh College Teachers’ Union, said the visit of President Obama has been a big positive for India. He added that criticising Obama for keeping mum on Indo-Pakistan issues is not fair because it has been a stand taken for long by India not to let anyone mediate between the two countries.

Ratinder Kaur from the Punjabi University,Patiala, expressed hopes that Indian banks will soon start operating in countries like the US. Gagan Deep Sharma stated that Obama’s visit was more of an economic visit than a political one.

He further added that India should have pushed harder for doing away with the competitive disadvantages caused to India by the anti-outsourcing laws passed by the US.

Moderating the discussion, journalist Kanwar Sandhu emphasized on the socio-political issues involving the two nations. He said Obama’s three-day visit to India is a clear signal that India has arrived on the global economic as well as political scenario.
