Jodhpur, September 30:: Nearly 150 people were crushed to death and 55 others injured in a stampede early this morning caused by a rush of devotees in the Chamunda Devi temple in the 15th century Mehrangarh Fort on a hillock here on the first day of Navaratri festival.

In a virtual repeat of the Naina Devi temple stampede in Himachal Pradesh on August 3, in which 162 people were killed, 147 devotees, mostly men, died when they were trampled upon by other pilgrims as doors of the temple opened for worship at dawn, according to Divisional Commissioner, Jodhpur, Kiran Soni Gupta.

She said four of the injured were in a critical condition. Over 1,000 people, mostly locals, had gathered from shortly after midnight for a glimpse of the Deity at the start of the Navaratri festival.

Different versions have cropped up over the reason for the stampede with one saying that there was a scramble on the narrow 2-km path for gaining entry to the hillock shrine in the Fort run by the family of erstwhile ruler Gaj Singh.

The casualties occurred in the queue meant for men while that for the women and children was unaffected, officials said.

In a similar tragedy three years ago, 340 devotees were trampled to death during an annual pilgrimage at the Mandradevi temple in Maharashtra.

Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said there was a huge rush in the queue for men and some people slipped causing panic and stampede.

Director General of Police K S Bains said there was a power failure and some people slipped on the ramp leading to the shrine which caused the trampling. However, he denied as incorrect that there were rumours of a bomb blast.

Eyewitnesses said as some devotees slipped on the 75-metre slope, others fell on each other causing the stampede.

"Many of those killed died due to suffocation as a result of the stampede," Principal Secretary (Home) S N Thanvi said in Jaipur.

15 to 20 people were killed on the spot and the others succumbed to their injuries in various hospitals including Mahatma Gandhi, Mathuradas Mathur and Sun City Hospitals here, officials said.

Chief Minister Vasudhara Raje, who visited the tragedy site, ordered an inquiry into the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each for the next of the kin of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the seriously injured.

Officials said the situation went out of control as devotees, carrying offerings, jostled with each other and tried to rush towards the temple doors breaking the barricades.

Jodhpur temple stampede by Pinak Kemkar on 2008-10-01 17:36:21.5076+05:30
It is sorry state of affairs that inspite of similar incidents in different states the administrators are not learning from past. we ultimately leave it as a wish of god and forget.
DEPRESSING by SHEREEN on 2008-10-01 14:10:46.137605+05:30
it is really depressing to find out that stampedes still occur, we go to worship why is there death tolls at the end of the day. we all are there for the same reason. we need peace and harmony not deaths.
May the best manage the temples by Som Karamchetty, PHD on 2008-10-01 06:56:40.507547+05:30
It is tragic and a shame that such stampedes take place at religious places. The best solution is to get the government out of managing temples and other religious places and events. Government officials treat pilgrims as animals and move them in constricted pens. In the case of a temple in the South, when I pointed out a potential problem, they passed the buck on. Let the affairs of temples and festivals be handled by independent trusts with accountability and transparency. I understand that both Shirdi and Satya Sai Baba trusts make excellent arrangements. Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam is very rich and has advanced technological systems. State Governments may focus on law and order on the periphery of the temple (Gurdwara, church, and mosque) towns. I hope BJP and other religiously inclined parties join together and get the governments out of religious duties.

Innocent lives could have been saved by education. by Sureshwar on 2008-10-01 02:46:12.290498+05:30
Only with discipline and patience that we can avoid such catastrophies. It is really hard for the families to absorb such losses. Unfortunately, pushing, rushing, elbowing has become our national character instead of dignified values. Perhaps all religious places should start teaching their importance to save the lives of devotees.
Blame not Centre by Pema on 2008-10-01 01:53:15.746746+05:30
One cannot blame the New Delhi for every mishap. Its the state government (Police and civil administration) and temple authority to control the crowd. Its also the responsibility of the devotees and public to be in queue and not try to jump ahead of others.
Safety First by A Lalprasad on 2008-09-30 23:36:43.640016+05:30
Organizers should take better safety steps during gathering of the heavy crowds. People also should learn to stay in line rathar than rushing to exit.
Criminal negligence? by Dnyanesh on 2008-09-30 23:33:47.344272+05:30
There is nothing that we can do to address this simple issue?1. Can we not have a floor made up of special (porous) material with rough surface so people will not slip? Have some better drainage system there?2. Can we not have queues for this activity?3. Can govt body not inspect these locations every year to see if they are taking precautionary measures? Taking responsibility after such incident can not bring back to priceless lives lost. When can we take actions on such issues?4. Can we not make sure that these locations have adequate space to accomodate these many people?5. Can we not learn and act from our past experiences?
Stampedes can be avoided by Eddy on 2008-09-30 22:40:55.139737+05:30
This incident shows the lack of discipline among Indians and all other South Asians. If there is such a rush at a temple (or even a rock concert for that matter) people should form Qs and the temple should hire a crowd management consultant. Only if the line keeps on moving in a disciplined manner can stampedes be avoided. Otherwise as population increases, crowds increase and herd mentality prevails, and a single shout of fire or bomb can lead to a stampede and tragedy.

It is really Sad by sandeep on 2008-09-30 21:14:19.527637+05:30
Festival season is round the corner and every weekend you are having blasts in India. Now on top of that stampades are happening. Till certain extent government can do some thing for it, but I belive its people whose mindset needs to be changed. Every devotee including me thinks, aaj to bhagwan ko pakad lo. I have been to different famous religious places, but everywhere its the same scene. I think thats what is circle of life. Some people will come into world, but some other existing in here need to make way for there entry.
Why blame govt for it? It is discipline! by Jojo on 2008-09-30 20:50:22.023825+05:30
Agree with Pasupathy. It is a matter of public discipline. No point blaming the govt, the authorities. The reported incident clearly shows that line was breached. Come on, a few undisciplined idiots caused this havoc. And such incidences keep happening because of undisciplined behavior of a few. There is always someone wanting to go ahead, drive on the wrong side, cross the line. And this gets multiplied then causing the havoc. The problem is, the number of people is so high that even 1% bad apples is a lot!
Lesson for extremists by Indian on 2008-09-30 20:02:07.038309+05:30
Why don't the Goons from Bajrang Dal/VHP/Shiv Sena do something constructive by managing the devotees crowd who are going for worship..instead of their normal daily routine of spreading hatred....
Crowd management ideas by Blue Planet on 2008-09-30 19:36:52.177114+05:30
This is very sad. Apart from people being jittery from recent acts of terrorism, there definitely is something temples and local administration can do to streamline the crowds during popular festivals. e.g. (a) installation of CCTV and TV monitors so people can watch the worship from far(b) Scheduling more time slots for the poojas(c) Providing opportunities for worship at other locations in the temple complex (d) Educating the locals (preferably by means of a popular religious leader / Swamiji) on the dangers of overcrowding and encouraging them to use the options that help reduce overcrowding
natural by reader on 2008-09-30 19:29:58.003227+05:30
this is quite natural for hindus in India. They have no concern for the other human beings and will act in such a way that they r superior to everyone. While some enjoy the fruits of recent liberalization the majority needs help from christian missionaries or loan from christian countries to be fed a meal ! Their further pride will make them fall much deeper. So much arrogant people and so much castism and seperatist ideologies u wont find anywhere in the world. They are proud of their civilzation but theirs is a civilization which is outdated !

BJP must answer the devout! by R. S. Sekhon on 2008-09-30 18:12:11.537247+05:30
The BJP had recently cried bloody murder over the conducting of the Amarnath Yatra even though the Yatra had concluded without any mishap. Now that they have 145 Hindu pilgrims killed in a stampede for want of proper safety measures and another 55 of them injured on their way to a Jodhpur temple, in a State ruled by their party --- the public would want to know what wretched excuses they have to explain away the utter neglect of the state government in ensuring the safety of the devout , especially the tragedy following on the close heels of a similar one in HP, a State ruled by them as well, in which 147 believers were killed. Ram, whose name the BJP so often shamelessly invokes in display of hypocritical self-righteousness every minute, is not going to let them go unpunished this time for all their cumulative sins. The BJP sounds so hollow in all that it professes and stand for, that people are now beginning to reject their bluff outright!
UPA government has neglected Hindu pilgrimages by Bharat on 2008-09-30 16:38:46.902667+05:30
It is a national shame that UPA government has neglected Hindu pilgrimage places. The facts of various incidents from last 5 years are:August 27, 2003: 39 pilgrims killed, 125 injured when faithfuls who were waiting to bathe surged over a flimsy fence triggering a stampede at Kumbh Mela bathing festival in Nasik, Maharashtra.January 25, 2005: 340 devotees trampled to death during an annual pilgrimage at Mandhra Devi temple in Maharashtra.March 7, 2006: 28 killed and 101 injured in two bombings across Varanasi. First blast at a Varanasi temple followed by another at Varanasi Cantonment Railway Station crowded with pilgrims.August 3, 2008: 162 dead while 47 are injured in a stampede triggered by rumours of a rockslide at Naina Devi Temple in Himachal Pradesh.August 10, 2008: Two pilgrims died when over 250 people were left stranded on stairs leading to ancient Mahadeva temple in Kota district of north-western Rajasthan collapsed. Is there a government for Hindu majority?
