Girl's five-year-old brother saved by passers-by
Ten-year-old Neha died after drowning in a pit dug by A2Z, the private garbage lifting company, on Monday evening while her five-year-old brother Karan was saved by passers-by. The pit was full of water following Monday's heavy rainfall. The incident happened at the backside of Orient cinema where the company has created a dump point. A few jhuggi dwellers live in the nearby area.
The children came to answer nature's call on Monday evening, when both of them suddenly slipped inside the deep pit as they were unaware of its existence.
Their parents had gone to the doctor's clinic for treatment of their third child. The nearby persons rescued Karan and rushed him to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) but Neha had died by the time she was taken out of the pit.
Poisonous fumes of garbage were also another contributor to the child's death. The huge dump has created a nuisance for the dwellers and even the near by shopkeepers as well who have to inhale foul smell all the time.
Municipal Corporation (MC) Additional Commissioner A S Sekhon informed, "An inquiry is being conducted in this matter and the report will be submitted by the Municipal Corporation health wing by tomorrow. Later we will suggest action."
Meanwhile, information revealed that someone from the garbage lifting company had visited the jhuggi of Neha's parents and were keen on a compromise but so far nothing has materialised.
Thakur, the father, and Sunita, the mother of the children, were seen today as well roaming in the police station to get a case registered against the violators.
Meanwhile, Universal Human Rights Organisation President Satnam Singh Dhaliwal too visited the parents' jhuggi and sought compensation for the family and also strict action against the company.
