11 Chinese travellers held for smuggling bid

Eleven Chinese air travellers were intercepted by the Airport Customs at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport recently for trying to smuggle Red Sanders in violation of the export import policy in India.

Eleven Chinese air travellers were intercepted by the Airport Customs at Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport recently for trying to smuggle Red Sanders in violation of the export import policy in India. Around 308 kg of Red Sanders,valued at Rs 15.40 lakh,was found in their checked-in baggage.

Following a tip-off,officials of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Airport Customs intercepted them on June 27 while they were departing by Malaysian Airlines MH 195.

The prohibited goods were seized under Customs Act,1962. The passengers were handed over to forests officials for further investigation.

In another case,an Indian passenger was also intercepted by AIU on July 2 after 16 pieces of gold were found concealed inside a 19 inch LCD TV. Modi Umar Isha had arrived from Dubai Jet Airways flight 9W 0537. During checking,customs officials opened the passenger’s LCD TV. Three cylindrical objects resembling capacitators were found inside. Eight gold biscuits cut into two pieces each were concealed inside the three objects. The seized gold,weighing 932 grams,was valued at Rs 22.12 lakh. The passenger has been arrested under Section 104 of Customs Act,1962.
