112 officers sacked on graft charges

Nearly 2,000 police personnel in the Delhi Police faced disciplinary action in 2012 and 112 were dismissed or removed from service following inquiries.

This was revealed by Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar at the Annual Police Conference held at the India Habitat Centre on Friday.

According to Delhi Police records, inquiries by the Vigilance Investigation unit into corruption related cases have resulted in disciplinary action against 1,968 police personnel in 2012.

"We have taken disciplinary action against erring police personnel and we believe in zero-tolerance for corruption in the force," Kumar said.

In 2012, 112 police personnel were dismissed, while services of 365 policemen were forfeited. Three police personnel faced a reduction in their pay, the increments of 103 officers were withheld and 1404 were censured (minor punishment awarded to a personnel, which stands effective for six months).

The Vigilance unit also suspended 479 police officers, conducted departmental inquiries against 961 and sought explanations from 4,861 police personnel.

As many as 3,193 showcause notices were disposed of in 2012 while 787 showcause notices are still pending.

The force also maintains a list of police officers with doubtful integrity (charged with corruption). Their names are placed in the list if they are found to have committed some misdemeanours or acts of moral turpitude as enumerated in the standing order. In 2012, 536 police officers were added to the list.

Special Commissioner of Police (Vigilance) Sudhir Yadav said, "In order to bring about transparency in policing, the Vigilance Branch has emphasised on preventive vigilance rather than punitive vigilance. By adopting such measures, they can more effectively curb corruption and encourage personnel to take timely action."

Apart from registration of senior citizens living alone, the Delhi Police is now also registering senior citizens who are left alone at home when their children go out to work. Of the 15,644 senior citizens registered, 362 belong to the latter category
