The Patiala police have erected checkposts at different points in the city and have booked nearly 150 people for reckless driving and driving without proper documents. They have also started night dominance to check the movement of anti-social elements. All this has been done following the increasing number of chain snatching incidents and the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.

With new Senior Superintendent of Police Arpit Shukla taking charge, special instructions have been issued and the city police are on a spree. Even station house officers have been asked to put up checkposts to curb the activities of anti-social elements and check violators.

Police officers say the drive is a result of an increase in snatchings incidents in the city. “We will not spare anyone and special care will be taken to construct checkposts in the city to check violation of traffic rules,” said SSP Arpit Shukla.

Officials said checkposts have been put up at Leela Bhawan, Fountain Chowk, Shera Wala Gate, bus stand and other areas, in addition to all entries and exit routes.

“We have received special instructions and are conducting checks on every vehicle,” said a traffic personnel deputed at Leela Bhawan Chowk.

“We come across numerous reckless drivers, who apart from violating the rule, duck signals at the cost of their own as well as the lives of others. Today also, we impounded a few motorcycles,” said a senior police officer.

“No one will be allowed to drive a vehicle without proper documents,” SP R K Sharma, said. He added that the checkposts would be there till elections.
