16 killed in cracker unit fire near Madurai

  • Sixteen workers were killed in a devastating fire at a cracker factory near Madurai on Tuesday. The death toll is expected to rise as there were nearly 150 workers inside the factory when the fire broke out late in the evening. Several of them have been admitted to hospital.

    Vadakkampatti village near Usilampatti, Madurai, was rocked by explosions when crackers in the storeroom were ignited by what is believed to be an electrical malfunction.

    As many as 14 workers died on the spot. Two of the injured succumbed to their burns at the Government Rajaji Hospital, Madurai.

    More than 30 have been admitted to Rajaji Hospital.
