16th edition of Techfest kicks off at IIT-B today

The sixteenth edition of Techfest, the three-day annual technological festival of the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay (IIT-B), which kicks off today will feature more than just robots and exhibition of software programmes.

This time around, IIT-B students have launched an initiative called 'give-a-coin' through which they will financially support a children's adoption programme and another initiative known as 'Ideate', which will bring together ideas from across the country in a hunt for technology in rural areas.

Apart from the same list of competitions and events such as machine wars and car races, the 'give-a-coin' initiative will help spread awareness on child adoption.

"We believe that by giving a coin, college students will also get to know about the cause we are promoting under Techfest and may take it up in the near future," said Shrey Singh, media manager, Techfest 2013.

According to organisers, like its previous editions, the festival will have numerous new technologies on display from all over the world along with guest speakers from India and abroad who will share their experiences and insights into their field of expertise with students.

There are over 150 events spread over three days and total prize money is Rs 17 lakh.

Speaking on the events, Singh said the 16th edition of Techfest would be even better than its previous editions as some of the best known inventors and their inventions will be on display. "There will be nano robots, exhibits on light and sustainable energy sources and many other exhibits from USA, Japan, France, Switzerland and from India will be displayed," Singh said.

The first edition of Techfest kicked off in 1998, with an aim to provide a platform to young engineers and scientists from across the country to share and spread their ideas.
