1993 blasts: 25 convicts surrender

TWENTY-FIVE convicts in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case surrendered before a TADA court Thursday to serve the remainder of their sentences.

TWENTY-FIVE convicts in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case surrendered before a TADA court Thursday to serve the remainder of their sentences.

On Wednesday,11 convicts surrendered before TADA judge G A Sanap. Eight others,including actor Sanjay Dutt,have been given additional four weeks by the apex court,while two others failed to appear before the court Thursday.

Proven guilty of possessing arms,attending conspiracy meetings and facilitating landing of arms,ammunition and RDX at Shekhadi and Dighi coast in Raigad district,most of the convicts face imprisonment ranging from 5 to 10 years. After TADA court’s judgement in 2007,convicts had applied for bail and have been out since then.

The convicts who surrendered were taken in batches to the Arthur Road prison,from where they will be sent to various prisons in the state.

The convicts who surrendered Thursday include Salim Durani,a member of the Nawab of Tonk’s family in Rajasthan,Uttam Potdar,Tulsiram Surve,Ghulam Hafiz Shaikh,Farooq Motorwala,Yusuf Khan,Suleiman Kasam,Shanawaz Khan,Mujib Sharif Parkar,Asif Yusuf Shaikh,Shaikh Aziz Ahmed,Mohammad Dawood Yusuf Khan,Mohammad Sayed Ishaq,Sayed Abdul Rehman Shaikh,Shahjahan Hajwane,Sikandar Hajwane,Ayub Qureshi,Ehsan Tuffel Qureshi,Mohammad Usman Shaikh,Liyakat Khan,Mohammad Kasam Lajpuria alias Mechanic Chacha,Ibrahim Baba Moosa Chauhan,Noor Mohammad Haji Mohammad Khan and Suleman Ghavate.

Two convicts,Ranjit Kumar Singh and Manoj Kumar Gupta,did not appear before the court Thursday. “The court will issue warrants on Saturday against them,” defence counsel Farhana Shah said.

While Singh has served over seven-and-a-half years of his nine-year sentence,Gupta’s sentence of 14 years was increased to life term.
