1993 police firing: Former IPS officer deposes

Kolkata: Retired IPS officer Nawal Kishore Singh appeared before the judicial commission probing the 1993 police firing in Kolkata that killed 13 Youth Congress supporters. Singh told the panel headed by retired judge Susanto Chattopadhyay that he had submitted his report to the then Commissioner of Police. "Singh said that he has no copy of the report that he had sent to the then ACP Dinesh Bajpayee. When asked about the contents of the administrative report he had given to Bajpayee, Singh said the report is of the government and he refused to share anything about it," Chattopadhyay said. Singh had moved Calcutta High Court to direct the commission not to summon him. But the court dismissed his petition.

'Germans keen to invest, will meet CM'

KOLKATA: A German business delegation to be led by its envoy to India will meet Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on December 11 to talk about investment opportunities in West Bengal, said Finance Minister Amit Mitra, who met a 20-member delegation of German industrialists and businessmen on Tuesday. "The Germans are interested in investing in areas like mining, steel and metallurgy, food processing and packaging and we have discussed it in detail. We want them for mining particularly as West Bengal accounts for 23 per cent of coal production of the country,'' Mitra said.

2 cops suspended for assaulting woman

Behrampore: Two policemen — Sub-Inspector Rajesh Gupta and Assistant Sub-Inspector Nizamuddin — were suspended on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a woman at Jangipur in Murshidabad district. The incident took place when police reached Mohammedpur village to control a situation erupting out of the quarrel over a piece of land. Angry villagers later chased the policemen and threw stones at them. Superintendent of Police Humayun Kabir said the situation has returned to normal at the village.
