Two children lost their lives after a fire broke out in their thatched hut in a forest near Kaimbwala village around 3.30 pm on Thursday.

One-and-a-half-year-old Sandeep and Kuldeep (3) were alone inside the hut when it caught fire and went up in flames in no time. Their elder siblings were playing nearby and the parents, who are daily labourers, had gone out for work.

According to the police,a candle may have caused the fire. “The elder siblings raised an alarm when they saw the flames but nobody could hear their cries as the hut was located over 500 metres away from the village,” said ASI Sewak Singh, who reached the site soon after the police was informed about the incident.

It was only after the children rushed to the village that help reached the children, who were already fatally burnt in the fire,Singh added. Since the hut was located away from the village, there was a considerable delay in rushing the injured children to the hospital.

By the time the children were rushed to PGI,a considerable time had elapsed,he added. While Sandeep died nearly three hours after the incident, the other child breathed his last on Friday morning,

Pet tried its best
The pet dog of the family tried its best to save the children when there was no help in sight. The dog, tied to a pole close to the hut, broke loose after the rope with which it was tied was burnt in the fire. According to villagers,it went inside the burning hut and tried to save the children by clutching their clothes with his teeth. It received burns on the face and around its eyes. Despite its efforts, however,it could not save the children.
