A police sub-inspector and a constable were injured after they jumped off a bridge near railway line in Mundhwa while chasing three thieves in the early hours of Thursday. Another police team later managed to arrest one the thieves who has at least 10 offences registered against him. The incident took place around 3 am when sub-inspector Rahul Kolambikar and constable Rameshwar Lokare, both attached to Mundhwa police station, were on their routine night patrol in a police van. When they reached Mundhwa bridge, they saw three persons loitering suspiciously on the bridge on two bikes.
"Kolambikar and Lokare asked them to stop but they fled after a scuffle with them. The duo chased them but the three jumped off the bridge. To catch them the policemen also jumped off the bridge but they suffered injuries as they could not judge the depth, which was around 15 feet. However, despite injuries Lokare managed to catch one of them but he was hit with a iron rod on the leg following which the suspect fled," said senior inspector Vishwanath Ghanwat.
The two immediately communicated with the police station and gave descriptions of the suspects. "Our team managed to arrest one of them. He is Siddheshwar Chavan who has more than 10 cases of robberies and burglaries," said Ghanwat. Mundhwa police have launched a hunt for the other suspects. Ghanwat said Lokare suffered fractures on both legs but both are out of danger.
