2 held for role in Cong leader’s murder

The Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested two men for their role in the murder of Pawan Raje Nimbalkar, a senior Congress leader who was shot dead along with his driver, Samad Kazi, on June 3, 2006 at Kalamboli approach road towards the Mumbai-Pune expressway. The case was being investigated by the Kalamboli police till October 2008 after which the High Court transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

 Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria said, "On February 5 this year officials from unit 5 office got confidential information about some deal regarding sale of weapons being carried out at Shahu Nagar. Acting on the information, the officials conducted a raid and arrested one Parasmal Jain (47), a businessman turned criminal from Dombivali. They recovered three pistols and 12 rounds of 0.32 bore from him."

 During interrogation the arrested accused said that he was the one who organised the hit on Nimbalkar for a supari of Rs 30 lakh. "Parasmal, who had a business of clothes and jewellery before both ran into losses, entered the world of crime after he came in touch with another criminal at a club in Mumbra. Parasmal would assemble teams of criminals with the help of his new friend (name not revealed) and organise robberies. He also confessed that he had initially received Rs 5 lakh to buy weaponry and the rest of the amount after the murder. We have also arrested Dinesh Tiwari (37), a notorious criminal from Gorakhpur who had been brought in by Parasmal for the shooting," said Maria.

 Asked about how the plan was executed, Maria said, "Parasmal got to know that Nimbalkar had a plot of land which he was planning to sell. Parasmal got in touch with Nimbalkar pretending to be a potential buyer and asked him to meet up at Kalamboli. When Nimbalkar came in his vehicle, the team of four men, including Parasmal, two shooters (Tiwari was one of them) and another person overtook Nimbalkar's vehicle and after intercepting him, opened fire at point blank range. After the shooting, the killers dumped their weapons at the spot and fled," said Rakesh Maria.
