Two persons were injured on Thursday when police resorted to lathicharge in Jammu on a group of Kashmiri Pandits who were protesting against the Election Commission of India accusing it of deleting names of large number of voters of the community from the electoral list.
Over 300 activists of Jammu and Kashmir Nationalist Movement,All India Kashmiri Samaj and Jammu and Kashmir National United Front demonstrated outside a polling booth in Jammu to protest enmass deletion of names of pandit electorate from the voter list,police said.
They also burnt an effigy of the Chief Election Commissioner of India and raised anti-EC slogans,they added.
As protests were held at the time of polling,police resorted to cane charge to disperse the mob in which two persons were injured and four others taken into custody.
Voicing serious concern over decrease in number of pandit voters in the valley,Chairman of All Party Migrant Coordination Committee,Vinood Pandit,alleged “the number has come down to 70,000 from 1.2 lakh,before their exodus in 1989,owing to mass deletion.”
He said that despite several reminders,the EC has failed to look into the matter.
Accusing the EC of failing to carry out its duties effectively in the valley,JKNM leader Surinder Kumar said “this is a very serious matter as it speaks volumes about fairness of the very conduct of democratic functioning and failure of role of the EC.”
Stating that the government itself have registered over 50,000 migrant families in the valley and a family generally comprises of five members,Kumar demanded an explanation from the election authorities on how the number of migrant voters have come down to 70,000.
