2 killed,6 injured in Mahim building collapse

A five-storey building collapsed on Monday evening,killing one and injuring six persons.

A five-storey residential building near Mahim Dargah partially collapsed Monday evening,killing one and injuring six persons. The deceased was identified as Jaibunnisa Abdul (76). The injured were taken to KEM,Bandra Bhabha and Sion hospitals.

Several persons,including family members of criminal lawyer Rizwan Merchant,are feared trapped in the debris.

The building,around 40 years old,housed a Maruti Suzuki showroom on the ground floor. According to locals,five-six families were living in the ground plus four structure. “Though the building was old,it was in a good condition,” said Vishnu Tandel,corporator from adjoining ward.

At the time of going to press,fire brigade had rescued eight persons.

Dr Sandhya Kamath,dean of KEM hospital,said,“One of the injured suffered head injury. He is stable now.”

Fire fighters said it was difficult to drive their vehicles through narrow bylanes. “Rain and traffic added to the problem,” said a fire officer.

The ward houses more than 60 dilapidated buildings,according to BMC data. Residents said the building was served an eviction notice recently.

Showroom owner broke the concrete base and the foundation pillars could not take the weight of the building ,a fire brigade officers said.
