The special operation wing (SOW) of the Pune police crime branch has arrested two persons — Suresh Sugandha Suryawanshi (54) of Dhanori and Laxman Kaluram Bhosale (50) of Yerwada — for allegedly providing fake documents to Johar Alam Mohammed Maulana (38), who was arrested in Yerawada on Tuesday.

The police had earlier arrested Johar Alam’s accomplice Nasir Mohammed Maulana from Bhiwandi in Thane. During interrogation, Nasir reportedly told the police that Bhosale and Suryawanshi prepared the fake certificates for Johar Alam Maulana. The police had recovered fake University of Pune certificate, bogus school leaving certificate, driving licence, bank passbooks, passport and foreign currency from Joharalam.

A team of SOW, led by inspector Rajendra Joshi, arrested Bhosale and Suryawanshi on Friday night. The police have recovered some fake documents and stamps from them. Both were produced before the court on Saturday. Judicial Magistrate (first class) R B Bhagwat remanded the duo to police custody till June 15.

Meanwhile, the Pune unit of state Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) has started parallel investigation in the case. Investigation revealed Johar Alam, who told the police that he was born in India and hails from Uttar Pradesh, is actually a native of Myanmar. The police suspect that both the Maulana’s have links with terror outfits. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ATS) Vinod Satav said, “We are probing if Maulana has any terror links. We have not got anything concrete so far,” he said.

It may be recalled that the bank passbook records of Johar Alam show that he received Rs 7.59 lakh from England. Earlier, investigations had revealed that he stayed in Bangladesh for 26 days and had also visited Saudi Arabia.
