In an apparent case of suicide, two junior college girls were found dead on railway tracks in Pimpri around 1 pm on Wednesday. Both are said to have flung themselves before the Pune-Lonavala local train, police said. The railway police have, however, registered a case of accidental death as till late evening the suicides could not be confirmed.

Police have identified the deceased as Shweta Raju Kamble (17) of Pimprigaon and Pooja Ramdhani Yadav (17) of Shashtrinagar, both Class XI students of Jai Hind School and Junior College,Pimpri. Shweta and Pooja along with their classmate Anamika Srivastav had not been attending classes for last four days.

Police said primary investigation revealed that the girls’ parents called them up on Wednesday morning after they came to know that they had been bunking college for last few days. To escape the anger of their parents, they may have decided to end their lives, police said.

The three girls came to the Pimpri railway station and jumped before the moving local train. The train ran over Shweta and Pooja, but Anamika escaped unhurt as she moved back in the nick of time. She is,however,in a state of shock and has been admitted to a local hospital, police said.

Parthasarathy Das,a neighbour of Anamika, who helped in admitting her to the hospital said,“On receiving the information from the police about the incident,we rushed to the site. By that time, family members of all the three girls had also arrived. Shweta and Pooja died on the spot. We admitted Anamika to a hospital as she was in a state of shock.”

“As per my information, the girls had not attended college for around four days. Shweta had learned that their parents had come to know about it. Being a neighbour,I have known the girls for quite long. They were good at studies and hail from decent middle class families,” he said.

Investigation officer, inspector Narsinh Bhosale of the railway police, however, said an accidental death case has been registered because the investigation so far has not confirmed that the girls had committed suicide.

“The bodies were handed over to the respective families after post-mortem. We have not taken statements of family members of the deceased. And Anamika is not in a position to speak,” Bhosale said.

Meanwhile, principal of Jai Hind School Jean Fernandes said the school was informed about the incident by eyewitnesses. “We immediately sent our teachers to the spot. They confirmed that the two girls who died were from our school,” she said. The third girl has not received any injuries, but is in a mental shock. “

Fernandes said the girls had not turned up for last four days. “In fact,in last eight days, they have attended the school only twice. The girls seemed to leave homes after telling their parents that they were going to school,” she said. “When children don’t come to school for 10 days or more,we send a message to the parents to see us. These days because of swine flu many children stay at home even if they get cold and we understand this,” she said.

Officiating vice-principal K C Sonawane said he identified the bodies. “The two girls were in uniforms,” he said.
